Dennis Patrick Slattery

    Dennis Patrick Slattery, Ph.D., has been teaching for the past 45 years. For twenty-five years, he has been Core Faculty in the Mythological Studies Program at Pacifica Graduate Institute. In May 2018, he was awarded Emeritus status at Pacifica and honored in the graduation ceremonies in Santa Barbara for his teaching and writing. From 1984-87, he taught teachers the classics of epic, tragedy, and comedy in the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture’s Summer Program for Teachers, under guidance of Dr. Louise Cowan, Director. He also taught for six years at the Fairhope Institute of Humanities and Culture’s Summer Program for high school teachers in Fairhope, Alabama, under the direction of Dr. Larry Allums, current Director of the Dallas Institute. He is the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of twenty-six volumes as well as over two hundred articles in books, magazines, newspapers and online journals. His titles include: The Wounded Body: Remembering the Markings of Flesh (2000); Grace in the Desert: Awakening to the Gifts of Monastic Life (2003), which was substantially revised and expanded to A Pilgrimage Beyond Belief: Spiritual Journeys Through Christian and Buddhist Monasteries of the American West (2017); Harvesting Darkness: Essays on Literature, Myth, Film and Culture (2006); with Glen Slater he co-edited and contributed to Varieties of Mythic Experience: Essays on Religion, Psyche and Culture (2008); with Jennifer Selig he co-edited Reimagining Education: Essays on Reviving the Soul of Learning (2009); Day-to-Day Dante: Exploring Personal Myth Through The Divine Comedy (2012); Creases in Culture: Essays Toward a Poetics of Depth (2014); Bridge Work: Essays on Mythology, Literature and Psychology (2015); and Our Daily Breach: Exploring Your Personal Myth Through Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick (2016). He has also published six volumes of poetry several of which were co-authored with other poets. With Jennifer Selig and Deborah Quibell he has co-authored Deep Creativity: Seven Ways to Spark Your Creative Spirit (forthcoming, 2018); and he co-edited, with Evans Lansing Smith, the Letters of Joseph Campbell (forthcoming, 2018). Dennis offers riting retreats in the U.S., Canada, Ireland, and Switzerland, using the thoughts of Campbell and other writers on mythology. (2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018)
